Worth
Text: Psalm 19.10-11
If I ask you, what is the worth of the Bible? What would you say? Is it a question that you have given much thought? The worth and value of something, is related to how much it really means to us.
I will never forget when I was in Africa once, and we gave away Bibles to the village people. Their faces lit up, many danced with happiness, others cried for joy, and all of them embraced the Bible and brought it closer to their heart. I saw how much The Book meant to them.
David knew the worth of God’s Word, because he spent time reading it and realising how important it was to meditate on the Scripture, day and night. It is not just about the benefits of reading the Bible, as we saw yesterday, it is also because we get to know God and what He wants from His people. You see it through the pages of scripture, that we discover the good and perfect will of God and, at the same time, we learn the way of the Lord. This is the reason why David could write about how much worth the Word has when he said, “they are more precious than gold…they are sweeter than honey…” (Psalm 19.10).
David gave more value to God’s word than gold and believed it sweeter than honey. Gold was the main sign of wealth and prosperity in the ancient world; honey was the sweetest culinary ingredient used at the time. David considered that the Bible more valuable than gold and sweeter than honey, it is clear that David thought he only would be able to enjoy God if he spent time in His Word. This is why he also mentioned how obedience would be worthy, because it will be a source of “great reward” (Psalm 19.11).
I would like to invite you today to open the Bible and use David’s own words as a prayer. Don’t rush away from the couch, allow time to God to speak back to you.
