Saturate Yourself With Truth

Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist. Ephesians 6:14

What lies are infecting your family? What lies have gotten a hold of the minds of your loved ones and those you’re trying to defend? For kids it may be the lie that they are not pretty or handsome or that they have to act a certain way to fit in. For friends and loved ones the lie might be the promise of momentary satisfaction that comes from an addiction. For a spouse it might be a lie about your relationship or a lie from their past that is keeping them a prisoner. The enemy’s strategy has always been to weave a web of lies so tightly around you and those you love that you can’t see your way out and you remain captive to his lies.

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

As spiritual warriors who are secure in our victory, our battle is to confront lies head on with the truth. This seemingly small difference makes a huge difference, because the first battlefield you’ll ever fight on is your mind. If you can change the way you think, you can change the way you live. Now that you’ve begun to see the supernatural behind the natural, you can spot the lies that your loved ones are believing. By walking in the Spirit and speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), you can begin to speak truth to the lies around you. The effect will be the same as bringing a powerful light into a dark room. As Jesus said, “the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION

1. Spend a few moments thinking about your family and loved ones. What lies have infiltrated their lives, either about themselves or how they are to interact with others?

2. Remembering the command to “speak the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15), what truth do you need to speak to the lies attacking your family and loved ones?

NEXT STEP

The next step in saturating yourself with truth is to filter your media. When spiritually defending those you love, you can’t be dictatorial and take all media away from them, but if you are a parent you can determine how much media your children take in, and if you’re defending a friend you can be intentional to carve out time when you engage in something beneficial and truthful with them.
